THE COMING OF THE LAWLESS ONE
Nero, who ruled as Roman Emperor from 54 to 68 AD, is often identified as the “man of sin” or “lawless one” mentioned in 2 Thessalonians 2:9. This passage describes the coming of the lawless one as being "according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders"1. Here are some interpretations of these elements:
Power: Nero wielded immense political and military power, which he used to persecute Christians and consolidate his rule. His authority and actions were seen as manifestations of evil power.
Signs: Some Preterists interpret the “signs” as the various omens and supernatural events reported during Nero’s reign. These could include unusual celestial phenomena or other extraordinary occurrences that were seen as divine portents.
Lying Wonders: These are often understood as deceptive miracles or false signs intended to mislead people. Nero’s propaganda and the cult of personality surrounding him could be seen as part of these “lying wonders,” creating a false image of his divinity and power.
Nero’s persecution of Christians, his tyrannical rule, and the chaos that ensued during his reign are viewed by Preterists as fulfilling the prophecies of the New Testament12.
